Summary

In Part Two, "Locks," Chapter 20, Francie always liked playing Go Fish with Elaine. She would attach "treasures she'd found, flowers, pretty rocks," to the backs of each card (108). Francie felt connected to Aunt Minn when she said she remembered doing the same with Elaine as children.

In Chapter 21, Shrina tucked Francie in on the couch near the lamp, which she "already felt belonged to [her] in some way" (109). Francie also felt attached to her other objects, including her soap dish. On the couch, Francie simultaneously did and did not think about her mother. "She was central...and also erased, excised from the moment like she had never been my mother in the first place" (112). She felt strange on the couch, falling into a memory of her mother. She always worried that Francie did not want to sleep with a nightlight or stuffed...
