Summary

It is now a week after Jane’s murder in the chapter titled “Friday, July 24th.” Cass learns more about Jane’s last hours through the news. Her feelings of guilt increase. People who were in the vicinity of the crime that night are reporting what they witnessed. Cass wonders whether she should call, but then worries that the police will be angry because she did not come forward earlier.

The man from the security systems company comes to the house in the afternoon. Cass does not like him from the beginning of the visit, and the situation deteriorates as he looks around the house and Cass begins to wonder whether he is really from the security systems company.
