Summary

In Chapter 9, "Zoe," Detective Price returns to tell the children Karel was attacked on his way from "his shift at the hospital" (53). Because his bike had a flat and he needed to visit someone in town, he tried hitchhiking. After the man picked Karel up, he stopped to check the smoking car. The last thing Karel remembers is the man leading him into the field. When Duncan asks about the car the man drove, the detective says it was baby blue. Duncan saw the car on the road. He draws a picture of it. The detective then shows them a picture of a man who resembles the milkman. Karel's brother, Tomas, delivers milk, and looks remarkably like the suspect. Later, the children discover they have "all gone back" to the field independently (57).
