Importance: This quote establishes the tone of the narrator as well as their willingness to break the fourth wall. These jokes, both about Nina and toward the reader, are frequent through the first half of the narrative. Furthermore, this first sentence establishes the humor that will take up a majority of the novel. It is meant to ease the reader into Nina’s crazy life so that they do not take the early events too seriously compared to the things to come.
