Summary

Chapter 37 begins as Cussy enters the Moffits’ yard and sees a body hanging from a tree with a baby crying below. A bloody sock slips off the blue foot, landing beside the baby. Cussy picks up the newborn and runs inside. Angeline lies in bed covered in blood. She tells Cussy that Willie took the baby, claiming he married a white. Cussy realizes the baby is blue herself. Angeline says in fact Willie is blue not her and Cussy wonders if they are related. Angeline starts to hemorrhage and Cussy wants to get Doc but Angeline says there is no time. She tells Cussy to take Honey. Angeline says the baby is a Blue and only Cussy will love her. Cussy promises to love her as her own, and Angeline asks her to read aloud.
