Summary

Chapter Eleven begins as Cussy returns home from her route, as her father is about to go to work. Doc has left a basket of food for them, a plea for him to be able to get their skin and blood for testing. Cussy almost tells Pa about Vester hunting her but he leaves too soon. Later that night as she goes to bed she takes out Henry’s candy. She thinks of how the Company keeps everyone indebted, forcing them to buy everything from their store, and sometimes go into debt. She thinks about her Pa’s lung illness, and how she and Pa have been hungry. That night she prays for Henry.

Chapter Twelve begins in May as Cussy is back on her route. Her first stop is 17-year-old R.C. who lives at the firetower, built by the Civilian Conservation...
