Summary

After the fire in Kingston Harbour the white people are more vigilant in Chapter 25. Meanwhile, Isobel finally gets Humphrey to propose to her. This angers Quinn as he knows her secret. He talks about keeping secrets with Lilith. As he gets closer to Lilith, she reminds him that they have to remember their place. He tries to create a sacred place in the house. When here, he wants her to call him by his first name. Even though he tries to create the environment of a man and a wife, Lilith knows that she does not belong to him. This makes her sad.

The day after she comes to this conclusion, Isobel summons her and the two women go to town to get material for Isobel's wedding dress. While they are there, Lilith sees slaves being sold. The whole experience frightens her...
