Chapter 38 Summary

When Valancy reaches the banks of the lank across from her island, she finds a bright purple car parked next to Barney's car. A man emerges and asks if that is the Redfern house. The man, Dr. Redfern, tells Valancy that Barney Snaith is Bernard Snaith Redfern. Dr. Redfern also reveals that Barney's family is worth millions, which shocks Valancy.

Valancy takes her father-in-law to the house. He reveals that he hasn't seen Bernie, as he calls him, in 11 years. Valancy says Barney has only been living there six years, and the doctor says he was traveling the world before that.
