Chapter 35 Summary

Valancy and Barney are in Port Lawrence doing some shopping. Valancy thinks of the Port and the forest as being two separate worlds. As Valancy and Barney are crossing over the railroad tracks, Valancy's foot gets stuck and a train is heading for her. Eventually, Barney is able to free Valancy's foot from the shoe and save Valancy's life. This is when Valancy realizes that she has lived beyond the year Dr. Trent predicted she would live. This is the first time that Valancy realizes that Dr. Trent might have made a mistake in diagnosing her.

Chapter 35 Analysis
