Chapter 20 Summary

Valancy receives her first month's pay from Roaring Abel. She goes into town and spends it all on a dress, hat and a few other items. Roaring Abel tells Valancy to come to an "up back" dance where he is playing music. Valancy wears her new dress and dances with a few boys at the dance. Later in the evening, the drunks show up and the crowd starts to get rough. Barney Snaith comes through the door and helps Valancy to get away from a group of boy demanding she dance with them and kiss them. Barney says he came to get her when Cissy told him where she was. On the drive home, they run out of gas.
