Part III Marianstat Summary and Analysis

In part three some time has passed. The revolutionaries are still in hiding and Cabarrus has set up a gallows to hang people in the public square. The first of Theo's revolutionaries to get caught and hanged is Red Cockade. Theo hides in the crowd, but where Red Cockade can see him. Red Cockade mouths the word nine, because Theo has asked his followers to hold out in torture for at least eight hours, to give them time to escape. Red Cockade held out for nine hours. Theo is grateful for Red Cockade's bravery and feels responsible for his life. Theo can't risk trying to save him, so he resolves at the least to be present at his death.
