Summary

In Chapter 5, “In Media Res,” the narration reveals that the protagonist was actually somewhat dissatisfied with her domestic life, for since her husband often had to travel for work, the protagonist was often saddled with the responsibility of taking care of the children. As a result, the protagonist was less free to pursue her own professional/creative interests. The narration then shifts to the day of the protagonist’s death. A police officer points a gun at her and says, “You should have stayed in your own country” (156). The narrative then shifts to a time when neighbors complained about the apparent condition of the protagonist’s house, even as she and her husband were having repairs and renovations done. The narration then comments on the fact that the protagonist often felt hounded by her parents, who would call her on the phone every day...
