Samson, now Tungata without reservation, spends a month in training under a woman named Wan Lok. It takes little time before he recognizes her abilities and she has his respect and attention. After a month, he is given a place at the front with the section leaders and told he is going in. They lay landmines in the road, and strike the farm houses leaving behind horrors not easily forgotten. They are leaving when Ballantyne's Scouts catch up with them. Tungata recognizes the voice giving instructions as the one who was at Khami mission the night Constance died. His anger clears his head. They fight, losing many men until finally able to make their escape and seven days later Tungata and four men return.
