Part One - 1895: Pages 261 - 305 Summary

Ralph persuades the locomotive driver using his rifle to go further north after they see the first bodies at Plumtree siding. He spells the stoker arriving two hours faster than usual, but at Kimberley the driver won't wait for Ralph while he looks for Cathy and Jonathan and is already well on his way south before Ralph gets to the top of the hill. He finds Cathy and their unborn baby girl both dead in their tent, and races through the camp seeking Jonathan, but finds no one.
