Summary

"At the Clinic – White": In first person narration addressing Doc, Jacob describes his unease in the white-walled waiting room of the clinic – his discomfort with the other patients, his conversations with Satan (who is sitting beside him), and his connections with 14 saints, the so-called Fourteen Holy Helpers, whom he believes take care of him. He also describes “a black man with white face, balancing a towering turban on his head” (27) being led out of the waiting room, saying the turban and the face makeup keep him sane. Jacob says that Satan suggested he should wear a turban to keep him out. Jacob tells him to go to hell.
