Something extraordinary has happened at the start of "The Ivory Acrobat," as a young woman stands amid a frightened crowd on a city street. The woman's name is Kyle, and she has just experienced an earthquake. Back in her apartment, she puts on walking shoes, dresses warmly, and sleeps fitfully in a sitting position on her couch. Early in the morning, she notices an aftershock and hurries outside. Few people have bothered to follow suit, and until morning she walks the quiet streets of what proves to be Athens, Greece.
