Summary

In Chapter 21, set in 1947, as Eve, Charlie, and Finn located the place where René opened his second restaurant in Limoges, Eve admitted she had not been there since René brought her one weekend. Charlie realized at that point that Eve had slept with René in order to spy on him. She wondered if she would be able to do the same. Charlie also wondered if Eve had a friend who had meant as much to her as Rose meant to Charlie.

The restaurant was closed, and the building had been vandalized. Eve found a neighbor willing to talk who told her the owner of the restaurant, a profiteer, was named René de Malassis. The woman said he had disappeared one night in 1944 and had never been seen again. She remembered him having shot a sous-chef in the back for stealing silver. Later...
