Chapter 2 Summary
Bryon and Mark go to the hospital to visit Bryon's mother who has just had an expensive operation. Bryon realizes, looking back at this time in their lives, that it was hard for them with little money or food. Mark periodically came up with some money, but Bryon never asked him where he got it. Mark was a thief, so Bryon assumes that he probably stole it. The boys hitch a ride to the hospital with a hippie in a Volkswagen van who tells them about a communal house where anyone can live in peace. The idea does not appeal to Bryon, but Mark asks many questions. He is curious about many things, so Bryon is not worried about him pursuing a hippie lifestyle.
When they get to the hospital, Bryon's mother tells them about a kid across the hall from her who does not get any visitors. She asks...
