"That Evening Sun" is about fear and the gulf separating the white and black communities which is both cause and result of that fear. The uncertainT ties of the story serve both subjects. Many of the gaps in Quentin's knowledge arise from the separation of the two communities; most of the uncertainties feed into our final uncertainty about the outcome of the conflict between Nancy and Jesus. This unresolved personal conflict reflects the larger unresolved social conflict of which it is a symptom.
