Summary

In the “Prologue,” 15-year-old Diana is excited when her parents agree to allow her to work the summer as a mother’s helper for Dr. Veronica “Ronnie” Levy in her family’s mansion on Cape Cod. Diana’s sisters give her a yellow bikini as a Christmas gift in anticipation. She imagines meeting a boy and getting her first kiss. During the summer, a boy she knows only as Poe befriends her and makes her believe he might love her. He and his friends are celebrating their recent graduation from Emlen Academy. Poe invites Diana to a bonfire. At the party, Poe tells her she is beautiful and gives her a drink. She believes it is the best night of her life.
