Mark wakes the next morning with a terrible pain in his head. He remembers that in the night he had strange visions, and one of these stands out. He wants to believe that what he saw last night was a nightmare, but then he realizes that it really happened. He was lead in to see the Head, and it truly was just a head. This head, Alcasan's head, has no body. It is able to speak with the help of air and artificial saliva that are pumped in through tubes.
