The chapter opens with Tex and Johnny gluing exploding caps on the keys of the typewriters in school, just before exams. Tex says there is no way they will be caught because no one will know who did it. He also says that even if they are caught, the worst that will happen is that they will be sent to the office and get a lecture. Johnny wryly reminds Tex that he does not have Cole for a father. After they have finished setting up their prank, Tex and Johnny go outside to the corner of the baseball field to wait until school starts. While there, they talk about the fact that Mason has received three scholarships. Tex says that although he thought Mason would calm down after getting the scholarships, Mason has.....
