Tex calls Johnny after the kidnapping ordeal and tells him to watch the news on television. The story makes the news across four states, and the brothers are flooded with phone calls. Tired of answering the phone, and stressed from the day's events, the brothers take the phone off the hook and go outside to smoke some marijuana to relax. This is highly unusual for Mason, who likes to remain clean for basketball; obviously, the kidnapping had a traumatic effect on him. The boys joke about how Lem would laugh at the idea of Mason getting high, but also note the special circumstances. They decide to only take a couple of puffs.
