The chapter opens with Johnny and Tex riding the bus to school; Cole has confiscated Johnny's motorbike for a week following the drinking incident. Tex recounts how he frequently gets in trouble at school, including one incident in which he set an art project on fire. He also mentions that the gym teacher has been hounding him to become the next family basketball star. The reader also meets Tex's English teacher, Miss Carlson, for whom Tex once wrote a book report on Smoky the Cowhorse, a novel Tex enjoyed. Miss Carlson helps Tex find other books by the same author.
