Chapter 3 Summary

Tex awakens to a terrible hangover and Cole Collins (Bob, Johnny, Jamie, and Charlie's father) banging on the front door. Mason answers, and when Cole demands to know who got his boys drunk the night before, Mason says to ask Bob. Cole then asserts that he does not want Mason and Tex associating with his children. That night, Lem Peters, an old friend who left school and town to get married, shows up at the brothers' home. He announces that he and his wife had a baby boy. The three leave to sneak into the Collins household and tell everyone the big news. While there, Tex sneaks upstairs to get Jamie and is almost caught by Cole. Jamie and Tex return to Johnny and Bob's room, where the happy atmosphere quickly turns sour.....
