Chapter 2 Summary

The second chapter opens with Mason tending wounds Tex received during their fight. Although the mood is still tense, the situation between the brothers has calmed somewhat. They begin talking about a fair, which Mason has decided he will skip this year. During the conversation, the topic of their father comes up. Mason suggests that Pop might never return, but Tex disagrees, saying that Pop will be back by Thanksgiving. They make a bet on it. Mason says Tex can go to the fair with Bob and Johnny.

Bob drops Tex and Johnny off at the fair, which is in a city twenty miles from the town in which they live. Tex and Johnny meet up with Jamie and her friend. They enjoy the rides, and then Jamie asks the boys if they have.....
