Summary

As they continue on, Pathka says that Kikiu is turning into a monster. Tess says Kikiu needed him a long time ago. In the morning, Pathka is missing and Tess feels the serpent. She finds Pathka at a crater that he calls the serpent’s nest. Above ground, Tess finds a monastery and convinces a monk named Moldi to let her in by calling herself Brother Jacamo. She is introduced to the head archivist Lorenzi and is caught off guard when Lorenzi asks about his cousin. After making up a story, Tess is taken to the library and becomes certain that the monks know of Anathuthia. Moldi seems shocked by this, and makes a scene to have himself removed from the library. Lorenzi is called away as Tess is taken to her room.
