Summary

Chapter 13 opened in 2003 when Christine was 30-years-old and had not yet had a stroke. Christine, Adam, and Mr. Paddington were hiking on Lost Coast trail when they encounter an elk. They had a map but she noted that a map cannot predict everything, such as an elk on the trail that prompted them to leave the trail. She said that she and Mr. Paddington had been friends for three years at the time of this hike, and “In ten years he will save my life and I will save his, and a year after that, we will fall in love” (193). They camped on the beach that night. Both Christine and Mr. Paddington struggled the next day, though they did not say so aloud. Mr. Paddington came up with the idea to walk backward because that created a different kind of pain, allowing endorphins...
