Spark, Tenar's son, returns to the farm after a six-year absence. Spark learns of his father's death and shows little reaction. Tenar informs him of all that has happened at the farm and makes a bed for him in the attic. For the first few days, Spark makes the rounds of the farm and learns how it has been cared for in his absence. Spark forces his mother to wait on him, causing her to feel embarrassment at his behavior.
