Home and Winter Summary

Tenar and Therru are greeted at the docks of Valmouth by Tenar's grown daughter, Apple. They spend a night in Apple's home and then make the trip home to Oak Springs, Tenar's farm. The neighbors and the two couples who live on the farm are excited to have Tenar back and it is not long before she settles into a regular routine. Therru, too, seems to blossom upon her return to the farm, playing with the neighbor children and helping on the farm. Again Tenar worries about Therru's future. The wizard from Valmouth suggests that Tenar prentice her to Ivy, the local witch. However Ivy refuses to take her on, claiming to be afraid of her.

On night as winter approaches, Tenar hears men's voices outside the house. Tenar locks the doors and begins closing the shutters. The men...
