Ria Johnson Lynch is the main character in the story. Ria is the younger of two daughters to Nora Johnson. Ria has been raised to be a good upstanding girl with good manners and strict morals. Ria has self esteem issues and always compares herself to others. First she is compared to her older sister Hilary and then to her lifelong friend, Rosemary. Ria's self esteem issue is reflected in her appearance.

Ria meets Danny Lynch and falls in love at first sight. Surprising to Ria, Danny falls in love with her instead of the vivacious Rosemary. Ria devotes herself entirely to Danny, almost to the point of obsession.
