Peter Warren Hatcher

Peter is nine years old and in fourth grade. He lives in New York City with his parents and younger brother, Farley, better known as Fudge. Peter is well-mannered and thoughtful but is not always patient with Fudge. Fudge celebrates his third birthday during the events of this novel. Peter is surprised when he begins to fill a different role with his brother, as role model and someone Fudge wants to emulate. Despite that discovery, Peter is terribly hurt when his pet turtle is eaten by Fudge. Peter believes that no one cares about his hurt feelings.

Peter does not talk a lot about school, but he obviously takes it seriously. When he is teamed up with Jimmy and Sheila for a project, he is determined they do well. He is furious when Fudge ruins a poster that is part of that project, but he turns...
