Chapter 40 Summary

Dirk returns to May-may's house to attend to her. They continue to feed her the tea every hour. May-may senses the presence of Dirk and the others and knows that she will live. She thinks about becoming a Christian but decides against it. Yin-hsi comes in to tend to May-may. She tells her that Dirk, who is sleeping in the chair, has been there for an hour. May-may feels better after bathing and changing into fresh clothes. Ah-Sam quietly tells May-may of the events that have occurred since Dirk arrived in Macao, beginning with Culum and ending with the death of Gorth.

Dirk awakens and is happy to see that May-may is better. He tells May-may that she has to continue to take the cinchona tea for four more days, even though she feels better. Dirk tells May-may that Gorth is dead. He...
