Summary

In Chapter 14, “Hold Still, This Is Going to Sting,” Dani’s dog Captain dies while Rachel and Hugh are out of town. Dani tells her mother that she did not want to disturb her. Rachael asks if Dani cried, and Dani says no. Dani rents a house near the clinic where she works from Esther. Dani sees Paul through a coffee shop window and remembers him as her first love “the honest boy who had pulled the pin on her family’s live grenade” (207). Dani goes to Rachel’s house and thinks about how she has not seen Adam and how difficult it is to look at him. Dani remembers the rumors about Jess being promiscuous and how Jess was her best friend.
