Summary

In Chapter 10, “The Shaking Season, September-November 1991,” Jess receives a letter from Adam with a key, address, and “I can’t” (138) written on a torn sheet of paper. Jess goes to meet Adam at the house on a quiet street. He tells her the occupants were a client and have moved. Adam confides that he thinks about her and wonders if he is having a midlife crisis. Detective Alvarez rings the doorbell, responding to a complaint. Jess hides, and Adam answers the door, telling Detective Alvarez that he is doing paperwork. Adam tells Jess not to tell anyone about meeting and Jess leaves. In the days after, Jess continues to see Warren and Warren tells Jess he loves her and she responds in kind. Jess’s legs ache from sex with Warren in the house where she went to meet Adam. Shaking season begins...
