Summary

In Chapter 41, after her fight with Nan, Flora examines a sleeping Gil and wonders how such a fragile-looking man could have ever been a womanizer. Nan runs away and Richard suggest giving her time alone. Flora disagrees, sending Richard to search for Nan throughout town. Flora calls Nan and Viv’s bookshop repeatedly to no avail. While she awaits Nan’s and Richard’s return, Jonathan, Louise, and Gabriel arrive. Jonathan comments that Flora resembles Ingrid more each time her sees her. Flora tells her visitors about Gil’s spotting Ingrid in Hadleigh. Everyone is shocked until Flora clarifies that Gil only thinks he saw her. Flora feels uncertain how to properly manage guests without Nan. When it begins to rain, Louise suggests everyone move inside. Louise, Jonathan, and Gabriel all appear shocked by Gil’s rapid decline.
