Summary

Chapter 31 begins with Flora pressing her ear to Gil’s bedroom door to hear what he and Richard are discussing. Nan shoos her away, and Flora takes a walk, making a conscious effort not to look for Ingrid amongst the beach goers. Afterwards, she lays on her towel, wondering what Louise looks like now and how Ingrid had ever been friends with her. Richard appears, advising Flora to move out of the sun. Flora retorts that she has lived by the sea her entire life. Richard explains that he and Nan are going shopping, leaving Flora to watch over Gil in their absence. After Richard and Nan leave, Flora sits with Gil in his bedroom. She attempts to draw him again, this time looking harder. She asks Gil whether he remembers the plastic whale’s head she found and asked him to hang up...
