Chapter 6 Summary

Catherine gets a phone call from Sally Barnes, the daughter of her sharecropper, Martin Barnes, and an old high school acquaintance. Sally wants to express her condolences for Catherine's terrible experience the day before. No sooner does Catherine hang up then the doorbell rings. Catherine hopes it might be Randall. Catherine opens the door to find Miss Molly, Carl Perkins' wife, there. Catherine is disappointed, so her reception of her visitor is not as pleasant as it ought to be. Miss Molly has brought Catherine some gumbo, as if finding a body is on par with a funeral, but she is clearly there to get fodder for gossip after seeing the sheriff's car parked outside. Catherine is polite but evasive, sending Miss Molly away with no information. Then the phone rings again. Catherine.....
