Chapter 2 Summary

Catherine drives out the dirt road that leads to her property toward the highway, passing two houses on the road in the process. Catherine later thinks that she could have stopped at the one occupied house there, but in her shock she drove straight to the sheriff's office in town. There the receptionist recognizes Catherine's state of mind and calls to the sheriff. Catherine tells her story, answering questions, such as whether she recognizes the person. Catherine says no. Catherine had thought she would be able to go home after reporting the body, but the sheriff informs her that she must go back out to the property to show him the body and to be present for the coroner's jury. This whole situation reminds Catherine too much of the day her parents died.....
