Summary

Chapter 10 opens with an introduction to what the narrator calls the biggest domestic scandal in Manhattan. It begins with Truman’s invitation to Slim for a luncheon. Babe is in attendance as well, and she asks Slim if she could borrow her husband, Leland Hayward, for the weekend. Apparently, Babe has agreed to host Pam Churchill for her sister Betsy and wants to use Leland for theater tickets and as Pam’s escort. Slim agrees, saying she will meet Leland in Paris a few days later.

Slim arrives in Spain with Betty Bacall and is immediately greeted by the scent of flowers and she is reminded of Truman taking Leland out to buy flowers for her, agreeing on Little Gem magnolias. Slim then remembers of how she found Betty, a beautiful young nurse who looked exactly like Slim. Slim, unhappy at the time...
