Chapter 20 Summary

Joe waits until he believes the narrator is asleep before entering the bedroom. She surprises him by running her hands over him. Even though she smells Anna's scent on his skin, she wants to have sex. She leads him out of the cabin, and they have sex on the ground. While having sex, she is thinking of her unborn child that she had aborted. She feels it forgiving her and lifting itself from the deep lake where it was for so long. She wants Joe to get her pregnant. She will give birth alone and lick the baby clean. She thinks her baby will be a god, covered in fur, and that it will never know any human language. Afterward, Joe believes that their relationship is all right again. He apologizes for having sex with Anna. Joe asks her whether she loves him, but she does not...
