Flynn Montgomery

Flynn is the novel's protagonist and narrator. At the time of the events he is narrating, he is a 24-year-old man living in Baker City, Oregon. In the early chapters, Flynn explains that his girlfriend Lola broke up with him because he never finished a writing project, and she found his lack of ambition and follow-through untenable. While going through a serious depression after this break-up, Flynn received a book deal, having sent a prospectus for a novel around to some publishers. Thus he becomes determined to write a novel and actually finish the project. Flynn decides to write about working in a supermarket, and gets a job at a local store called Muldoon's in order to research it.
