Summary

Chapter 1, titled The Beginning of the End, begins with the narrator, Flynn, wondering how he got into his present predicament, in which he has just violently murdered a man. Flynn lit a cigarette for the dying man using a lighter with the words “Vanilla Sky” (5) emblazoned across it. The dying man claimed that this situation was “all Lola's fault” and then asked, “Flynn, didn't we have fun?” to which Flynn responded, “You ruined my life” (5).

In Chapter 2, titled Daydream, the narrative shifts back in time. Flynn explains that he was a 24-year-old man living in Baker City, Oregon, who had recently endured a bad breakup.
