Point of View

Gary Shteyngart tells his novel Super Sad True Love Story in the first-person limited-omniscient perspective, from the points of view of both Lenny and Eunice. The novel is presented as a series of diary entries, e-mails, social media messages, and instant messages. The diary entries are all from Lenny’s point of view (given that he is more old-fashioned and still writes things by hand) while the majority of electronic communications are from Eunice (since the majority of her communications are online). Because it takes two people to make a romance, and because both people will approach the romance from different places and with different perspectives, only by understanding both individuals can one truly understand the romance as a whole.
