Chapters 29 - 34 and Epilogue Summary

In Chapter 29, Robicheaux visits Clete Purcel at home in Jeanerette. Robicheaux tells Clete that Harpo Scruggs has disappeared. The two men go to a cockfight in St. Landry Parish to look for Scruggs. When Scruggs finally arrives at the cockfight, Robicheaux tells Scruggs that Ricky Scarlotti is dead. This means that Scruggs will not be able to collect on the contract to kill Cool Breeze Broussard.

Lila and Archer Terrebonne visit Robicheaux at home. Lila tells Robicheaux that she has "forgiven" Archer for his past mistakes (pg. 337.) When Archer Terrebonne attempts to make peace with Dave Robicheaux, Robicheaux tells Archer that he knows Scruggs is blackmailing him. Lila Terrebonne slaps Robicheaux's face.

In Chapter 30, Jessie Rideau, another ex-prostitute, claims to have been at the Morgan City motel from which Jack Flynn was kidnapped. According to Rideau, she...
