Summary

In Act I, Chapter 7, Cedar follows the boy, later identified as Leo Bishop, to the college campus. Cedar continues to follow and realizes Leo is headed for the Summerlost Festival, a well-known Shakespearean event. Her family has attended in the past. One year, Cedar's father was chosen to participate on stage. Another year, Ben was upset and cried until his mother took him to a grassy area to play. When he returned, he was willing to cuddle with Cedar. She says he “was a boy and now he's not anything” (19).

In Act I, Chapter 8, Leo greets Cedar, indication he knew she was following. Leo says he is 12 and works at the festival, which makes Cedar realize she could work at the event as well. They introduce themselves and Leo says Cedar's name sound like that of a movie...
