Summary

In “Time of the Season,” when Kate leaves Jessie and Exalta alone during the ferry ride to Nantucket to talk to her friend, Bitsy Dunscombe, Exalta surprises Jessie with a birthday present. Jessie opens the velvet box to find a gold chain with a gold filigree knot embedded with a tiny diamond. Exalta explains that her husband gave it to her on their first wedding anniversary.

Jessie faces a quandary when Exalta asks her to try the necklace on because she has to take off the Tree of Life necklace her father gave her. Jessie knows that Exalta does not like David because he is Jewish and wonders if the gift is a way to keep Jessie from wearing the Jewish symbol. Jessie’s fears subside when Exalta tells Jessie she will keep the necklace for her...
