Summary

In “Prologue: Fortunate Son,” Richard “Tiger” Foley returns home from his job at the driving school, his mother, Katharine “Kate” Nichols Foley Levin, tells him there is a letter for him. It is his draft notice from the Selective Service. Tiger has to report on April 21, Kate’s birthday. Kate pulls into the line of cars at the recruitment office, knowing that when she told her husband, David Levin, she wanted to go alone with Tiger that she had hurt his feelings. They had made a point not to differentiate between their child, Jessica “Jessie” Levin, and Kate’s children from her marriage to Lieutenant Wilder Foley. Kate feels certain that Tiger will never return from the war. She believes that she is being punished for what she did 16 years prior.
