1927 Summary
Nel marries Jude Greene and it is a grand affair at her mother's house. Helene loosens her uptightness because she realizes that after the wedding, she will have years to clean up the mess. Jude Greene is well liked, a waiter at the Hotel Medallion and a singer in the men's choir. He is not planning on getting married until he realizes he is unable to get a job working on the new road connecting the Bottoms to the rest of Medallion: the gang boss always overlooks the black men trying to get jobs for the less qualified white men. Jude is disappointed because he wants to have a manlier role than just being a waiter. When he finally realizes it's impossible to get a job working on the road, he decides to pressure Nel to marry him so at least he can have that type of manly role and...
