Summary

In Chapter 21, the day that Alix came back from New York she tried to talk to Emira about Kelley. Alix felt that Emira was uncomfortable around her and that she did not really want to talk as Alix explained she did not need to feel uncomfortable about dating Kelley. Alix could tell that Kelley had not told Emira what happened and hinted that Kelley had not respected her privacy. She added that Kelley “had a habit of fetishizing African American people and culture” (218) and did not want to see Emira hurt. Emira pointed out how long ago that had been. She interrupted Alix to tell her that she needed to go so she and Briar would not miss the movie they wanted to see.

Because Alix felt she had not made an impression on Emira she went to confront Kelley at work...
